Why it matters

The incident raises serious concerns about public safety and the consequences of reckless driving in urban areas.

A 29-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with attempted murder after a car hit pedestrians in central London on Sunday morning, and left one woman in a life-threatening condition.

Gabrielle Carrington, of Broadfield Road, Manchester, was remanded into custody after appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court also charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, actual bodily harm and drink-driving.

Carrington, who has more than 365,000 followers on Instagram under the handle RIELLEUK, starred in the X Factor live finals in 2013 as one of the three members of Miss Dynamix.

Klaudia Zakrzewska, 30, and a man in his 50s were seriously injured and another woman had minor injuries.

The Met Police said officers were called to Argyll Street in Soho at 04:30 BST after reports a car had hit pedestrians.

Carrington is accused of grievous bodily harm to security guard Anoush Chyche, a man in his 50s, who was also struck by the car and is said to have suffered "life-changing injuries".

She is also accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against Latisha Armstrong, a third person hit by the car.

The court heard Carrington had 61 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath when tested.

Family and friends for Zakrzewska also attended the hearing.

She remains in a life-threatening condition in hospital, the Metropolitan Police said on Tuesday morning.

The accused was seen making a heart sign to her friends and family in the packed public gallery as she was led out of the dock.

Her next court appearance was set for 19 May at the Old Bailey.

David Malone, deputy chief crown prosecutor for the CPS in north London, said: "We remind all concerned that proceedings against the defendant are active and that she has the right to a fair trial.

"It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
